Signs your heat pump needs service

A heat pump works in both seasons, so problems can show up in summer or winter.

Cold air in heat mode

A few minutes during defrost is normal. Cold air for longer than about 15 minutes at a time is not.

Ice that won't clear

Light frost is normal. Thick ice that covers the outdoor unit and doesn't melt within an hour or two needs a look.

Aux heat always on

Backup heat should help on the coldest days, not run all the time. Constant aux heat drives up your electric bill.

Stuck in one mode

If it won't switch between heating and cooling, the reversing valve or controls may need repair.

Mini split leaking or blinking

Water dripping from an indoor unit or a blinking error light usually means a drain, sensor, or refrigerant issue.

Rising energy bills

A heat pump losing efficiency runs longer in both seasons and leans harder on backup heat.

How heat pump service works

No guesswork, no pressure, and no surprise charges.

  1. 1

    Call or book online

Describe what your heat pump is doing in heating or cooling mode, and we'll get a technician on the way.

  2. 2

    Test both modes

We check heating, cooling, the defrost cycle, and backup heat to find the real cause.

  3. 3

    Price before repair

Once we know whether it's the defrost controls, a valve, or refrigerant, you get the full price and decide what's next.

  4. 4

    Fix it and test it

We make the repair, test the system in both modes, and walk you through what we did.

Heat pump questions

Are heat pumps a good fit for North Texas?

Yes. Our winters are mostly mild, which is where heat pumps shine. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a properly installed air-source heat pump can deliver two to four times more heat energy than the electricity it uses.

What is a ductless mini split?

It's a heat pump that doesn't need ductwork. An outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor units mounted in the rooms they serve, which makes it a great fit for garages, additions, and older homes.

Why does my heat pump blow cool air in winter?

Heat pump air is warm rather than hot, so it can feel cooler than furnace air. It can also blow cool air for a few minutes during a defrost cycle. If it lasts more than about 15 minutes at a time, call for service.

When should I use emergency heat?

Only when the outdoor unit has stopped working or is iced over. Your system brings on backup heat automatically when it needs it, and emergency heat costs much more to run.

Does a heat pump need maintenance twice a year?

Yes. A heat pump runs in both summer and winter, so a spring visit checks the cooling side and a fall visit checks heating, defrost, and backup heat.
